If your company has a business casual policy, you might wish to limit how far you “dress down” if you want to protect your valuable visual brand. With the popularity of business shirts in windowpane plaids, it’s possible to look dressed down even when wearing a tie. The plaid shirt above looks informal, but it has a white background, so it’s great with ties.
Windowpane plaids have been popular on the West Coast for years. Now they’re spreading like wildfire to Europe and the East Coast. They’re my choice for a classy Casual Friday look – provided you wear them with a tie. Make sure your windowpane plaid has a white background or it won’t look good with a tie.
To go with your windowpane plaid, select a tie in a solid if you don’t have an expert eye. Otherwise, choose a striped tie with your plaid shirt – provided the primary stripe is wide, not narrow. Lots of narrow stripes would make the eyes spin.
