Image Consultants advice for Hair and hairstyles

Brad Pitt is considered one of the most attractive and sexy stars in Hollywood. Yet in the photo on the left, he looks frumpy and perhaps unsuccessful. The photo to the right shows a little improvement. However, it's that lean masculine jawline that makes Brad so appealing.

Look at the photo right, and you'll notice that the rounded "dip" of the goatee makes his jawline look chubby and rounded. Why?

It’s all about “line.” Many men adopt a goatee in the hopes that it will camouflage a double chin. It doesn't!  It just makes yet another round line (see photo above!) that will suggest plumpness.

sANDY dUMONT, tHE iMAGE aRCHITECT, DISCUSSES RED GOWNS AT oscars

So many red dresses were seen at the Oscars last night! Here are my favorites, from left to right, Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein, Jennifer Hudson in Versace, Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang,  and Anne Hathaway in vintage Valentino.

There were many stunning gowns, but nothing stands out like a fabulous gown in red. That's because red is the color of life itself; the blood coursing through our veins. Red is sex, per se. After all, it's how we got here. When you wear red, it reminds us we're alive, and we got out of our robot "another day, another dollar" mode. We smile when we see red.

Jennifer Lawrence's gown is as simple as an elongated T-shirt, but it could steal the show from the most extravagant and elaborate gown in any other color. That's red for you! Jennifer Lawrence has an amazing figure, but the style of Jennifer Hudson's gown was the most figure flattering. That swirling  and flared skirt with fabulous bow, just shouts "curvy." Of course, Valentino is renowned for his red gowns, and Anne Hathaway's is one of the most beautiful. Valentino always goes for "feminine and pretty" so this gown is my personal favorite. It's yummy. Sandra Bullock had the best red color; it is rich and intense. Reminds me of one of those old cars in shiny Candy Apple red. Awesome.

Katie Couric Hair Study by Sandy Dumont, The Image Architect

Hello beautiful Katie. You look fabulous in pure white, and it really makes your face look luminous! However, the white shirt looks a little staid. I'd recommend a pair of bold earrings to offset it - maybe a silver Omega necklace to add authority.

Love the contrast of the dark jacket with white top, and the earrings are wonderful. Tip: the pendant brings the eye down, so it's better to have a pendant dangling a bit higher so as to not look suggestive.

President Obama watched by Sandy Dumont, The Image Architect

Dear Mr. President,
A reminder that grey is a very passive color and needs to be made positive by the addition of a power tie in a bold color. The tie on the left is just plain wimpy. Pale colors come across as passive and powerless. A man's tie is the only place where he can make a statement! Look at the tie on the right and notice how much more sophisticated, professional and powerful you look wearing it!You also look handsomer.

As for the middle tie, this is the "politician's look" - in other words, it doesn't make a statement either way. Grey says, "Maybe yes, maybe no" or "Maybe positive, maybe negative"  - like a grey lie or a grey area, it's murky. It's popular with politicians, for obvious reasons. But it's not a great choice for the President of the United States. I'd love to see you in more bold colors - especially the "new reds" in colors like the raspberry tie above, or in red-violet, plum, magenta or burgundy (now that's a power color).

Hair cuts of Justin Bieber

Image consultants place a great deal of weight on hairstyle, and this is definitely an improvement for Justin. The shaggy dog style is reminiscent of Rod Blagojevich's hair, and it never looks good on anyone. The new style is much better. It lets us see his face, plus it doesn't look like "your mother cut it with the help of a kitchen bowl."

Next step, a style that is a bit longer in the back - no bowl cut there either!

Jennifer has a very common face shape  that I call the "heraldic shield" - think of a family coat of arms. Her upper jaw juts out a little, causing her chin to look a bit pointy at times. Her previous hairdo (photo left) camouflaged this perfectly - and it was really flattering to her entire persona.

The new hairdo (center and right) is a blunt coat and forms a straight line. Straight lines are rigid and less feminine. She would look more feminine with a bit of pointy layering just around the face - similar to her previous style. As you can see from the photo on the right, she originally went golden blonde, and it didn't suit her. It also looks as if she changed her makeup from cool to warm to match her yellow hair. Never a good idea, even though that's what most makeup artists do. Skin trumps hair, and you must never put warm foundation on cool skin because it will look thick and cakey. I'd skip the dark eyeliner also, because it only makes the eyes appear smaller.

The middle photo is the best in terms of hair and makeup color. See how luminous her skin looks compared to the photo on the right. She looks extraordinary in terms of both hair and skin color.  Just tweak the hair alongside the face with a bit of pointy layering and you'll be your usual "10" self!

SandyDumont, The Image Architect is watching Katie Couric

Katie, can't say enough how much I love your hair now that it's getting longer. It's absolutely perfect in the photo on the left. One thing to note is that you have cool skin and the orange sweater is warm. If you look closely, you'll see that  with the  orange, you get a circle of pale "hot spots" under your eyes that even the thickest of TV makeup can't banish. This makes your eye makeup seem darker and hard. This won't happen when you wear cool colors like fuchsia, royal blue and purple.

Your suit with matching blouse, on the right, is elegant. It's also a warm color, and a drab color as well, so it dulls your hair and gives you an overall somber appearance. Of course with all the somber news you had to report, it was probably an instinctive thing. So sad to hear about Lara.

Katie Couric NBC Evening News Anchor
Katie, that's a great necklace on the right. One suggestion, choose a shell to wear under your suits that falls at least one inch lower - even two inches. If you look at the photo on the left, you'll see that your neck looks much wider on the right, and that's because there's nearly a straight line from the suit jacket to the top of your shell, and this near-horizontal line suggests a wider neck. That's why the "Hanes T-shirt" line is for men, never for women!

I love all the bolder earrings you've been wearing. Think about wearing bolder colors, too. Like jewel tones. Love that purple suit of yours!!

Another tip:  the rounded  cowl collar of the suit on the left tends to look a bit matronly compared to the snazzy peak collar of an Armani jacket, for example. Glad you teamed this jacket with a necklace. Think about adding really bold earrings to keep the attention on the face when you wear a drab color. You look so much prettier in jewel tones!

Katie Couric CBS Evening News Anchor and Managing Editor
Picture on the right: Katie, your hair is looking great! Love  the silver earrings -  and the massive silver chain necklace; it really makes the perfect statement for the Evening News and a woman of your stature.

Picture on the left: Turtlenecks don't do you justice, Katie; they are too collegiate looking - especially when worn with a camel blazer.

Katie is improving her hair and style!

Image consultant's advice:  Katie, please don't cut your hair again. I love the way this style (or even an inch or two longer like it was before)  frames your face so nicely -  and makes you look really pretty. That short hairdo didn't do you justice.

Of the three photos, I like the one on the right because of the way the blonde streak makes a nice  contrast. Adore the chunky  hoops in the center photos. They make you look so much more professional than the dainty pearls in the photo right. The chunky hoop necklace in the left photo is fabulous also. I wouldn't wear a top quite as high as the white one in the right photo. See how much nicer the left photo looks. It's all about line. The white top makes a severe straight line, so it can make the jaw appear wider, as well as the neck. I'd love to see you in that beautiful royal purple suit again!
