Power Dressing

Sandy Dumont, International Celebrity Image Consultant advise for Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State

The blue pantsuit is a good style and good color for you. Glad to see you're not wearing any more of those campaign-trail pantsuits that flared out at the bottom in a Nehru style, like the one above, right. They didn't flatter your figure. Also, the blue color is a bit wimpy - as are all pastels.

The green jacket is also an unflattering style for you. First, the fabric is too bulky, so it makes you look hippy; and the color is all wrong. Anything that resembles olive or army green should be avoided. Better to choose the dark "racing green" or a dark jade green with subtle blue undertones.

Also, your hair looks less sophisticated when it's flipped up (center photo). Your hair looks best in the photo left!

Sandy Dumont, wardrobe and image consultant expert about business attire for men.cas

Both #1 and #2 are fashion looks and not power looks, because of the color of the shirts worn. The dark brown shirt, in particular looks gangsterish with the white tie. The red shirt and matching pocket scarf look fashionable, indeed, but this look is for someone in a very creative field and not a competitive business arena.

The man in #3 (on the right) appears businesslike except for his jeans, so this look is also for a creative arena. In addition, everything he wears is in a solid color. At least one of the three items worn (shirt, tie, jacket) must have a pattern so as to not produce a monotonous look. A striped shirt or suit, or a tie with patterns would suffice.

A man’s shirt sleeve should extend one-half inch (.5cm) below his suit sleeve. In the photo left, the white lining of his suit jacket is showing, so his shirt sleeve is obviously well above it. The jacket of the man in the center photo is too long, and his extended hand reveals an arm instead of a shirt.   The man on the right has no visible shirt cuff, so his shirt sleeve is too short or he is probably wearing a short-sleeve shirt. Short-sleeve shirts are never acceptable for business attire. Furthermore, jeans are out of place with a jacket and tie in a formal business setting.

Sandy Dumont comments on hairstyles of celebrities

All three women above are beautiful and elegant - and they all have some sort of bob. In the middle, you see Patricia Arquette with the original and classic bob. All the hair is one length.

Gwyneth Paltrow's bob (at left) is the American and British version, and it's a takeoff on the Vidal Sassoon look - longer in the front and shorter in the back. Heidi Klum's bob is in the French style and has pointy layering that frames the face.

Which hairstyle is best for you?

The classic bob is a little dated looking, even though it remains popular. If you have any shortcoming around the jawline or chin, don’t go for a bob this short, because it draws attention to the chin and will make it look longer and/or or more pointy. It’s better to do the classic, one-length bob in a shoulder-length style.

My favorite bob is the French version, right, because it frames the face so beautifully and looks the most natural. If you want to make your face look like a perfect oval, this is the style for you. It can be worn with or without bangs/fringes, but the angled side-part bangs look great with this bob.

The English bob, left, looks much more stylized, so it doesn’t shout “natural.” It works best with hair that is straight with good body so that it doesn’t look stringy. Unless you have very good features, this may not be your best choice. If your face is very angular or pointy, this style will accentuate the fact.

If you need evidence that it's nearly impossible to be objective about yourself, here it is!

Image Consultants advice for Hair and hairstyles

Brad Pitt is considered one of the most attractive and sexy stars in Hollywood. Yet in the photo on the left, he looks frumpy and perhaps unsuccessful. The photo to the right shows a little improvement. However, it's that lean masculine jawline that makes Brad so appealing.

Look at the photo right, and you'll notice that the rounded "dip" of the goatee makes his jawline look chubby and rounded. Why?

It’s all about “line.” Many men adopt a goatee in the hopes that it will camouflage a double chin. It doesn't!  It just makes yet another round line (see photo above!) that will suggest plumpness.

Get advice from an expert before you opt for a beard or goatee.

When it comes to image, you get one thing wrong and that’s all they notice. When you get all those little details right, then they only notice YOU. It’s all about impact that is made in a matter of one or two seconds.

Juanita Before and After

Juanita arrived at the makeover workshop looking attractive, but she didn’t know about color. The brown jacket drabs her hair and her sweater is too close to her skin tone so there’s no contrast. New makeup and clothing colors give her a beautiful glow, and a little magic with Sandy’s flat iron turned her hair into a look that says “classy woman.”

The minute Juanita walked in the door of my studio, I knew I would get out my flat iron and tweak her hair. Juanita has lovely silver hair, but the cut was a little choppy. I suggested she let it grow out a little, so she has a long sweep of bangs on one side, a la Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada.”  In the meantime, I smoothed out her hair on both sides with my flat iron so it resembled Streep’s elegant look. Juanita loved it.

Next I changed her makeup from warm colors to cool ones. First, the foundation; I replaced the golden tones with cool coppery-pink tones. It smoothed her face enormously. I finished her look with a deep ruby lipstick and a raspberry-toned blusher.

To finish Juanita’s look, I added bold chunky earrings in silver to go with her hair. Gold accessories would be jarring with silver hair. Brown is also out of sync with silver hair, so when she wants to wear dark colors, brown is out and black and navy blue are in. Lastly, I added the fabric and feather pin to harmonize with her beautiful silvery hair, and also to correspond with her black pants.

Beards are often said to indicate a man wants hide something  or not be seen. Former Vice President Al Gore grew a beard after the notoriously contested presidential election of 2000. But beards aren't the only way to hide.

As former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich became more embroiled in scandal, his hair got longer and longer. In the photo on the right, he is deep in accusations of bribery. Either he just didn't want to see things because they were so bad, or he desperately wanted to hide beneath his hair and not be seen.

Hillary Clinton's Longer Hair

Hillary’s hair looks great in the photo on the left, and it’s a highly-sophisticated style. It softly frames the face and also softens the jawline area. This is the perfect length for anyone past fifty. The color is good as well. It may take a little more time to care for and manage this style, but it’s highly flattering and worth the effort.

The style of the middle photo falls short in many respects. Flips are not very sophisticated and harken back to Barbie. This style also makes the forehead appear very square, and it simply isn’t a flattering line in general.

The hairstyle depicted in the picture on the right has no merit at all. This is a teenage style and not sophisticated enough for Secretary Clinton’s position.  It isn’t flattering either, because

(1)   it exposes the chin and jawline;
(2)   it makes the hair appear thinner; and
(3)   it also reveals the roots.

Madam Secretary, hats off to you for having the courage to let your hair grow. It’s a painful process, as we all know. But it’s been worth it. You look younger and prettier with your hairstyle in the first picture.

Political Candidates Need a Winning Wardrobe

This is a group of politicians running for national office in 2008 from an unidentified state. It’s doubtful the men in the photo used an image consultant, because four of them have committed big image errors. As I alternate each month between male and female case studies, I’ll skip the woman in the photo.

Only the man in the center (3) gets the Image Architect's okay, even though orange is not a traditional "power tie" color, as is red. Perhaps he went to a university that has orange as its school color. His tie would get higher marks if he had stripes or small repeating patterns in a color that matched his suit. Yellow can be a good choice for a tie, but not when it is worn with a dark gangster shirt that looks more like Las Vegas than Washington (4). Other bad ties include those with busy patterns (gaudy) as in # 1 and # 2 and those that nearly blend into a dark suit (drab) as in # 5.

Two or three of the men appear to wear brown suits. Unless your constituents are in the agriculture arena, you won’t get their votes, because brown is a safe color (monks), not a power color.  Man #4 wears a brown shirt and matching suit, so he’s really off track. I’d suggest that man #1 shave his facial hair; he’ll look more trustworthy; and at the very least, shave the beard and leave the moustache. The glasses worn by #5 make him look older; I’d suggest classic horn rimmed glasses like attorneys often wear. Lastly, never hold hands with yourself in a photo, because it is a sign of insecurity. Let your hands fall by your side.

Lady Gaga has transformed herself from a frumpy street urchin (left) to a high-fashion pinup.

It’s acknowledged that she’s had a nose job (see before and after photos below), but it’s likely that she’s also had a little liposuction at the jawline. My favorite photo of her is the center photo, because she looks so soft and feminine with the pink lipstick and hair that isn’t so mustard yellow. Yellow is jarring with pink makeup! She’d be better in Violet lipstick with that yellow hair.

Hillary, all you need is a change of makeup colors and a little paler shade of blonde and you’ll be ready for the cover of Vogue. Yes, that’s Lady Gaga on the right in a very demure moment – and after the nose job.

Rand Paul is an attractive man, but when he's having a bad hair day, it's another matter. It's no wonder we refer to hair as a person's crowning glory. A bad hair day can cause a person to look dated or even less attractive. On the left, he looks not only less attractive, but less credible.

Rand Paul isn’t the only politician or celebrity to have a bad hair day. Nick Nolte (below left) will forever go down in infamy for his mug shot on the day he was arrested for drunken driving. Alas, it seemed this was the turning point for Nolte, who hasn’t been seen in a film since then. And even The Donald (below right) can have an ultra bad hair day.

Dennis Crowley, guru of telephone apps, seems to have a perpetual bad day. The photo below on the left  is his current coif. The photo to the right is the before version when he was still in school. Dennis, here’s a recommendation for you.  See farther below.

Dennis, take a look at the photos of the men below. Because you have a long face, these hairstyles, which are similar, would be perfect for you, and it’s still very non-conformist.
